The Dutch band Son Nouveau (loosely translated as ‘Their New Sound’) blends ‘80s new wave and post-punk influences into their own unique sound. So, it’s no coincidence if you hear echoes of bands like The Cure or Joy Division in their songs.

Son Nouveau sounds like a classic sports car with modern upgrades: the charm of the original is still very much present, but the band members have installed a new, more powerful engine. This might not even be just a metaphor, given that all four members are engineers. They creatively apply their technical background to their music, constantly experimenting and considering every detail. The result? A roaring, melodic sound with the drive and definition of a rumbling V8 engine.

In 2017, the band began its musical journey, which ultimately led to the release of the singles Dance and Wednesday. Wednesday even made its way to indie radio stations like IndieXL and Pinguin Radio. After these online releases, Son Nouveau was featured on the official Spotify playlist Ruig & Riffs for a long time and was also included in The most popular releases from Gelderland in 2020 by 3voor12 Gelderland.

Fast forward to 2023, the year in which Son Nouveau — at that time consisting of lead singer and bassist Lars Petersen, keyboardist and guitarist David Bas (SelfScan), and drummer Luc Verhoeven — released their debut EP Transitions and strengthened their lineup with guitarist and vocalist Kai van Grunsven (See Sarr). They also became residents at De Basis in Nijmegen, joining a lively, artistic community. This transformation has shaped them into what they are now: a well-oiled machine ready to unleash their music on stage.
